The spy Vladimir Rezun (“Viktor Suvorov”), was a low-level Russian defector to the British Secret Service during the Cold War. He obtained a book contract and Icebreaker: Who Started the Second World War? was the result (and later, its sequel/revision, The Chief Culprit: Stalin’s Grand Design to Start World War II).

These works, along with John Mosier’s Hitler vs. Stalin (formerly titled Deathride), attempt to vindicate Hitler’s invasion of the USSR (Joachim Hoffmann’s Stalin’s War of Extermination, undertakes a similar objective).

Rezun/Suvorov’s work is by far the most influential in the genre. Historian Frank Ellis in Operation Barbarossa: Reframing Hitler’s Invasion of Stalin’s Soviet Empire (2015), has capably overturned Rezun/Suvorov’s thesis. Ellis addresses numerous claims made by Suvorov and shows how they do not support Suvorov’s foundational thesis that Stalin’s invasion of Germany was preempted by Hitler’s invasion of Russia. Contrary to the view of the Hitler partisans, this rejection of Rezun/Suvarov does not signal that Ellis believes Hitler was more evil than Stalin, or that everything Hitler expressed concerning the bloodshed by Joseph Stalin or the iniquity of Bolshevism, was a lie. Recognizing Hitler’s criminal incompetence in invading Russia before Germany defeated Britain, does not ipso facto connote or lead to a pro-Soviet stance, or a failure to grasp the moral and ethical correctness, at least in theory, of a military crusade against Stalinism, at the proper time and under the right circumstances.
